Q&A: Phân biệt Trust, Depend và Rely

Để diễn tả sự tin tưởng vào ai đó, ta có các cụm từ thông dụng sau:

1. depend on somebody/something
2. rely on somebody/something
3. count on somebody/something
4. believe in somebody

Các cụm từ trên đều có nghĩa là tin tưởng ai đó; tin vào điều ai đó nói là đúng, là sự thật
trust: You can trust me not to tell anyone. ◇ Don't trust what you read in the newspapers!
depend on/upon somebody/something (thường dùng với can/cannot/could/could not): He was the sort of person you could depend on. ◇ Can you depend on her version of what happened?
rely on/upon somebody/something (thường dùng với can/cannot/could/could not và should/should not): Can I rely on you to keep this secret? ◇ You can't rely on any figures you get from them.

Vậy đâu là sự khác biệt?

Bạn có thể trust a person, không thể là a thing hoặc system. Bạn có thể trust somebody's judgement hoặc advice (sự đánh giá hoặc lời khuyên của ai), nhưng không thể là support
Bạn có thể depend on somebody's support, nhưng không thể là judgement hay advice
Rely on/upon somebody/something hay count on somebody/something (thường dùng với can/cannot/could/could not): tin tưởng ai đó sẽ làm điều gì hoặc điều gì sẽ xảy ra: I'm counting on you to help me. ◇ We can't count on the good weather lasting.
believe in somebody: tin tưởng ai đó (sẽ thành công): They need a leader they can believe in.
